"God, What is It that Breaks Your Heart?

Today, while in chapel, we sang a song with the line, "Break my heart for what breaks Yours." I used to think I really knew what broke my God's heart.

You know, sin of course. God hates sin.

While this is true... I have to wonder if the act of sin is what really breaks His heart.

I don't really think so.

God wants sinners. God put Himself in the company of sinners when He took the body of a helpless infant and walked the dirty, dusty trails of the earth. He walked with them. He met them at the well. He fed and listened to them. He didn't deny them.  Think about the woman caught in adultery with me for a moment {it's found in John 8} the Pharisees tested Jesus by bringing this woman before the council.  They were ready to dictate her fate. But not Christ, His words were few. He spoke of forgiveness and repentance.

"Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”

{No condemnation} God will meet us where we are at.  He knows we can't fix ourselves. He doesn't want us to clean up before we go to Him. He wants us to run into His arms like a child who is desperate for his superhero of a dad. He's the one who does the fixing and the transforming. Besides, our attempts at cleaning up are completely hopeless and futile, aren't they? {How long do our New Year's Resolutions normally last?...}

 He isn't denying me and He's not denying you.

So what really breaks our God's heart?

Seeing the ones He created grasping for hope in all the wrong places.

Us, withholding this hope and life.
Being too afraid to get a little dirt on our hands to reach out to the hurting.
Shutting out the people who need Him the most.

Let God.
